This ukulele tuner listens through your microphone and tunes your ukulele one string at a time. Soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles share the same tuning, G, C, E and A, with the G string tuned high so it sits between C and A. Only the baritone is different. The sound is analysed in your browser and never leaves your device.
How to tune a ukulele with this tuner
- Pick your tuning: Standard (gCEA) for most ukuleles, Low G if your fourth string is thick and wound, Baritone for a baritone, or D tuning if a songbook asks for it.
- Press Start and allow the microphone. Hold the ukulele close to your phone or laptop.
- Pluck one string at a time and let it ring. In Auto mode the tuner picks the nearest string; turn its peg until the needle sits in the centre and the readout says "Locked ✓". Flat means tighten, sharp means loosen.
- Hold the note steady for half a second and that string gets a tick. When all four strings have one, the tuner shows "All strings tuned".
- In a noisy room, press a string on the diagram to tune that string only. Press Auto to go back.
Ukulele string notes and frequencies
Strings are numbered from the one nearest the floor (string 1) to the one nearest your chin (string 4). Frequencies assume A4 = 440 Hz; if your band tunes to 442 or 432 Hz, change it under the reference tones.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| String 4 | G4 · 392.00 Hz | G3 · 196.00 Hz | D3 · 146.83 Hz | A4 · 440.00 Hz |
| String 3 | C4 · 261.63 Hz | C4 · 261.63 Hz | G3 · 196.00 Hz | D4 · 293.66 Hz |

Low G uses the same notes as standard tuning, only the fourth string drops an octave, from 392 Hz to 196 Hz, for a fuller bass. Baritone DGBE matches the four highest strings of a guitar, so our online tuner for guitar and other instruments works for it too.
Tuning a ukulele by ear
Without a microphone, tune the strings to each other. Tune the A string first, from the reference tone above or a piano, then:
- Fret the E string at the 5th fret (A) and tune it until it matches the open A.
- Fret the C string at the 4th fret (E) and tune it until it matches the open E.
- Fret the high g string at the 2nd fret (A) and tune it until it matches the open A.
On a low-G ukulele, the 5th fret of the G string matches the open C instead. To check that you hear and sing a pitch accurately, the pitch detector and note finder shows your note live.
Clip-on, app or online tuner?
A clip-on tuner feels vibration through the headstock, so it works in a noisy room, but it is one more thing to carry and its battery runs out. An app or an online tuner listens through the microphone: nothing to buy and accurate in a quiet room, though loud sound nearby confuses it.
Ukulele tuning questions
What is standard ukulele tuning?
G4, C4, E4, A4, often written gCEA. The lower-case g marks the re-entrant fourth string: it is tuned higher than the C next to it, which gives the ukulele its bright, close-voiced strum. Players remember it as "My Dog Has Fleas".
Do soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles use the same tuning?
Yes. All three use gCEA, and many tenor players switch to low G. The baritone is the exception: it is tuned DGBE, like the top four strings of a guitar.
How do I tune a low G ukulele?
Choose Low G (GCEA) in the tuning menu. The fourth string is then G3, 196 Hz, an octave below standard. It needs a thicker, often wound, string; a standard high-G string tuned that low is too slack to play.
How do I tune a baritone ukulele?
Choose Baritone (DGBE). From string 4 to string 1 the notes are D3, G3, B3 and E4, the same as the top four strings of a guitar.
How often should I tune my ukulele?
Every time you pick it up. Weather and playing pull strings out of tune, and new strings stretch for a week or two, so retune often while they settle.
Is this ukulele tuner free, and does it record me?
It is free, with no app, account or ads. The microphone sound is analysed on your device and is never uploaded or stored. The tuner remembers only your tuning, mode and A4 setting, in your browser.
