About musitool
musitool is a small set of free music tools that run in your browser: a chromatic tuner, a ukulele tuner, a vocal range test and a pitch detector. It is built and run by one independent developer who plays and sings, and who got tired of online tuners that load slowly, bury the tool under ads, and never say how accurate they are.
So the aims are simple. Each tool opens fast and works on a phone. Your microphone audio is analysed on your own device and never uploaded. And the accuracy is measured and published, below, rather than claimed.

How accuracy is measured
Every tool shares one pitch engine. It uses the YIN pitch-detection algorithm (de Cheveigné and Kawahara, 2002) with an adaptive analysis window, a noise gate that adapts to your room, and a guard against octave errors, the most common way tuners go wrong. The engine is tested in two ways.
Synthetic signals, where the true pitch is known exactly. These run on every change to the code.
- Pure tones from 41 Hz to 2,000 Hz: the worst error was 0.11 cents, inside the ±1 cent target.
- 122 sawtooth and plucked-string notes from E1 to E6: no octave errors.
- 220 sung-vowel imitations from 80 Hz to 1,000 Hz: the correct note every time (99.87% of frames).
Real recordings from public research datasets.
- 360 real instrument notes (the NSynth test set): 97.78% read as the correct note.
- 1,008 sung notes (the vocadito dataset): 98.41% within ±50 cents of the annotated sung pitch. Singers drift between notes, so strict rounding to the nearest semitone scores lower, at 91.07%.
Speed. On synthetic notes the first stable reading arrives within 300 ms of the note starting every time (the slowest took 251 ms). On real recordings the median is 78 ms for instrument notes and 93 ms for the start of a sung phrase; 96.7% of instrument notes and 87.2% of sung phrase starts settle within 300 ms. The engine uses well under 2% of one processor core.
These figures come from the engine's test report of October 2026 and will be re-measured as the engine changes. Your own microphone and room matter too: a quiet room and a single clear note give the steadiest reading.
